Writing Thesis Manual

A thesis can be one of the most rewarding, productive experiences of a graduate student's career. As an educational venture it is fundamentally different from the normal classroom experience. It is an opportunity for students to be creative, to bring together and integrate skills they have acquired, to make a real professional contribution. The thesis is a means for students to demonstrate both to themselves and the world that they have achieved a respectable level of professional maturity.

Doing a thesis is also a rare opportunity for a person to concentrate intensely on a professional project they care about, and which they have defined. Many will not have similar experiences again for a long time, if ever. Work after graduation is often spread out over many different projects, and subjected to all kinds of extraneous pressures. The period in which you do your thesis is "whatever it may seem like at the time" relatively sheltered and unpressured. You should appreciate it.

A thesis is often scary. No doubt about it. Many students are initially anxious about how they will manage to complete such a large and demanding project, generally much larger and more challenging than anything they have previously done professionally. Moreover, many naturally suffer from moments of despair along the way as things do not go according to plan. This is natural too.

Many of these thesis crises can be prevented or overcome by appropriate forethought. With the proper guidance, much of the possible pain of doing a thesis can be avoided. This manual presents some guidelines designed to help students execute their thesis expeditiously. These represent both philosophical and practical suggestions concerning issues which have appeared most troublesome to students. They get revised regularly based on comments and suggestions . yours would be most welcome.

Experience validates the usefulness of these guidelines, especially to students who have some latitude in defining their thesis topic. Over 700 graduate students in the MIT Technology and Policy Program have tested these recommendations since 1980. Experience also indicates that students doing a thesis benefit from carrying out the exercises at the end of each chapter. These explicit exercises represent tasks that all thesis students should in any case be doing, implicitly in their heads if not on paper. They are thus definitely not a waste of time. They provide opportunities for the thesis student and the advisor to check progress on the thesis and to make mid-course corrections in good time.

AIT Phone Operation

  • Call from overseas to AIT: +66-2-524-xxxx, where xxxx is phone extension (e.g, 6852).
  • Call from Bangkok or inside Thailand to AIT (same to using mobile phone): 02-524-xxxx.
  • International out calling - use of mobile phone. There are two ways:
  1. Dial 009+country code + area code + phone number. e.g: to Vietnam, HCM: 009-848-825-1245.
  2. Dial 001+country code + area code + phone number. e.g: to Vietnam, HCM: 001-848-825-1245.
  • Service using 009 prefix is NetIP call. Sometimes it gets low signal due to high traffic. Prefix 001 is a normal service.
  • International out calling - use of phone card: phone card can be purchased at 108, Minimart of Bookstore. Phone cards are also including many types: Netphone, cable phone. Netphone is at around 25-30 THB per minute; cable phone is at 40-50 THB per minute but with higher sound quality.
  • Call out from desk phone: Only registered phones can call outside AIT. All other student's desk phone must be registered with AIT Phone Operator before being able to call outside number. Registration free is 300 THB (data from 2005).
  • Call to Bangkok: 02-xxx-xxxx
  • Call to other provinces: 0x-xxx-xxxx
  • Use of phone boxes: Phone boxes are located near AIT dormitories D and groceries. Calling free to Bangkok is 3 THB per call. Time is unlimited until hang up.
  • Fax to Bangkok: 3 THB per job.
  • Pirated phone card: There are some people selling pirated netphone cards for international call at 5-10 THB per minute. Do not buy from them because they're stealing credit cards and converting that dirty money into phone cards. Some others acquire satellite services for phone calls illegally.
  • Phone operation in AIT:
  1. Operator: dial 9 to acquire information from AIT phone operator.
  2. Automatic callback: if the target number is busy, dial 6 and wait for 3 seconds, then hang up. When the other side has finished the current call, your desk phone will automatically be rang. Lift up and start the conversation.
  • Services:
  1. Taxi: 6300
  2. Security, campus jobs: 6000
  3. AIT Center: 5250, 5252
  4. Ambulance, clinic: 5286
  5. AIT Police box: 5051
  6. GRU (GRO): 5022

They get the financial support from French Goverment to popularize French language.

Who knows this support? Why not support from Thai government? This is Thailand and they should have promoted their own country.

Why dont you ask Language center to know the exact answer. Why is English class free?
Thai gorvernment have many ways to promote their culture, why should they provide free Thai class?

Properties lost in AIT

Loss has become a common phenomenon in AIT. Loss can happen at the library, in the laboratory, on the road or anywhere else. There are three typical reasons of loss:

- Properties were taken by someone while the owner either went out for a second;
- Properties were dropped by accident;
- Unidentified drop or being taken.

Many cases are very funny (by mistakes that can be written into Guiness); many are serious (bunch of key including president office…), lots of data, money, credit cards, cameras and so on are losts.

Many more I am not able to list here.

Check it out the Green AIT.

To Whom It May Concern at SU,
- Could you please forward this to the students at AIT? Thanks.

- On Sunday December 17, 2006 my wallet was lost (or stolen?!) in front of Dorm X while doing laundry in the evening (6pm). I do care about the money that was in the wallet, but it is difficult to replace the id and family photos.
- If you found it, or have it, could you please give it to Student Union or security? I promise I will not get you in trouble, I just want my id back.
- It would really make my holidays better.
- Thank you.

Dear SU and friends,

Last night, I lost my bike in frond of a shop near the cafeteria after only three minutes away to have a solf drink. Actaully, I found it but I spent almost the whole night to walk around to surf for it which I could do nothing esle afterwards.

I am really very sorry to be in such hard experiences and I do not expect that there is such kind of a crimal person at a well-known international graduate school like AIT.

In this mail, I would like to convince that person who commit such qulity as an immoral thief. You did not want to be hard by your own, but you did not care what other unhappiness. I want to ask you that what you did last night was the right thing for you? and is it acceptable for accademic persons like us?

Finally, I would like to suggest SU to take a strong measure on it because we are honest persons facing such unacceptable activities. In addition, we can not bear with rude routines behaved by a few people in a very big community.

Looking forwards to hearing from you!

Subject: lost keys
Dear All,
I have lost my keys somewhere between SERD and the Admin Buildings. It was a big bunch of at least 10 keys with a silver hook attached to one of the rings.
I've been in the SERD computer lab most of the day, and also went to the secretary's office, dean's office, and finance office. So chances are, the bunch of keys is somewhere in that area. If someone finds it, then I will be very grateful if it is returned to me.
Thank you.

In some quiet moments of my life, I have discovered how amazing the earth's creatures have been. Not only how they have been created, but also how surprising their actions, those creatures are around us in many aspects of life. Let's walk with me thru the camera's lens to the world of amazing earth's creatures.
