AIT's Serious Problem

One of the serious problems in AIT which put the citizens here into a very difficult situation is loss of properties. Many cases have been reported to Student Union or campus authorities. From the year of 2006 backwards, one could usually observe vehicles passing the security gate without being checked like now.

Properties lost cases happened not only within residential area, but also academic buildings. Security Taskforce has announced many cases of lost laptop computers and LCD projectors in class rooms and faculty's offices. During semester break of May 2007, a thief was caught by Security Guard while intruding into SU Cafe stealing an audio amplifier and other things. AIT central library is also an ideal spot for thief because to their belief, AITians assume the library to be a safe place. The best prey is laptop computer. Several students lost their laptop here within a few minutes going out to rest room or making a phone call.

Ridicularly, small things can be lost overhere. I myself got laundry baskets lost twice as I left it in the laundry room while being back to my place for 30 minutes. In another day, the water tank left outside the main door for the waterman to exchange at the end of the day got ... lost also.

Woman's clothes got lost? Believe or not, it's true. The laundry service applies a rule prompting customer to hang or leave their used clothes outside the main door. This has become a good target for thief to steal branded and expensive clothes. Where can they wear such stolen thing? This might be an unanswered question.

Losses of properties can be listed with following items:

- LCD projector
- Laptop computer
- Bicycle
- Cloth, footware
- Books
- IT things in the lab.
- and anything left insecured.

How to prevent thieft?

- Do not leave your room unlocked, both main door and room door
- Lock your bicycle whenever you park
- Never leave library table with valuable things on it
- Never do the same while you are in the lab
- Always be concerned about thief
- Report immediately to the authorities if the case happens to you or if you have observed it.

Do we really live in a safe environment? Please add up your case or the case you have known/observed. Bringing alert to people is the best way to prevent thief.
