Food for life or disaster?

People are ... eating for surviving and enjoyment. The first reason is likely appropriate for those who are sticking their asses to AIT's study corners. Since the imperium of Sodexho has been set up in the Cafeteria, quite a lot of uneasy experience has been accumulated among those future doctors and masters. Promised to the citizen of the AIT kingdom, Infrastructure Office and "king" of Sodexho company would improve food quality and reduce price. Taken over former vendors, Sodexho established a shiny decoration on the dinning hall and a "stylish" officer team. However, one important thing which the company has forgotten is "reduce the price" and "food quality". MO do not want to elaborate that much, students have talked and discussed. If you are concerned, please read following emails and give your comments.

hello,

what is happening to the food condition in cafeteria and Snack Bar. whose
responsibility is this to monitor such necessary things, I guess it is the
SU. Do you see the food condition with less options in the cafeteria and do
you see the same rush as before? I guess students prefer eating outside,
near the lake side, VN restaurant, thammasat, etc. Do the students need to
suffer for their regular meals in the campus? Please do something. Ofcourse
I am nobody but I guess most of the students have complained. More number of
students come to eat in Snack bar than before, not because the service and
food quality in snack bar had improved, but because cafeteria had gone
worse, it becomes their last option. Please do something; we know you work
for the AIT students.

regards

Dear Fellow Students;

I do agree with Dorji Yangka. The food conditions in AIT are deteriorating
from day to day. Cafeteria does not have enough menus to represent the food
taste of many students especially South Asian food. Besides, in the snack
bar, it is a total waste of time going there, you have to shout, scream, and
wait in long queue and waste one hour so that you eat.

I guess SU will follow this seriously and make sure that cafeteria offers
what we need and cater to the taste of students and that SNACK BAR improve
its conditions.

Thanks a lot.

Yes you are completely right. Poor usage of facteria facility as well.
- Small option for food
- Dramatical dropping down of number of people use facteria
- However, hygient condition is better
Yes SU should urgently do something to improve food condition at
cafeteria. Regards, Chanthy

Hi.....

Thanks everybody for raising the issue. I think its a vital issue as
food (lunch and dinner) is the only ingredient to keep our health fit
for study here at AIT. But I am totally disappointed by seeing the food
that we are getting in Snack Bar (I never used reformed cafeteria). I
am sharing only some instances:

(i) Quality is degrading day by day. Many times I found spoiled
curry. This is happening because they frequently keep the surplus
amount of one period for next event e.g. unsold items in lunch
time will be kept for dinner and vice versa.

(ii) After few days, new faces are appearing like musical chair who
are not efficient in serving food. Thats why we have to spend more
time than it should actually be required. They even don't know
what the price of each item and what should be the standard
quantity. So, for the same food, price will be varied up to 10
baht depending on the person who is serving.

(iii) What I feel that they less bother about hygiene. Their attitude
is like that no one is here to ask them.

I hope we won't have any problem if we see them charging sometimes
more. But we need good and quality food. Thats our only concern. We,
therefore, urge SU to look into the matter without any delay and we
hope so.

Best,

Pranay K. Das

Dear all,

I am in favor with the complaint raised by Dorji and others regarding
the food quality and services in both Cafetaria and Snack Bar. Actually
we've been discussing this matter among friends for quite a long time. I
urge that SU oversees this matter in whatever capacity it has. But
firstly I think SU should hold a forum or a survey among the students to
collect sounder and deeper views. With these, it can then start to talk
seriously to the Operations Manager of the Cafetaria or to plan an
upgrade for the Snack Bar.

Sincerely,
Berlian Kushari

Dear Sir/Madam,

Today, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm within this 5 and half hour the
following mails are directed to AIT Students and to SU President.
I guess, as per the Clause 5.2 (b) and 11.1 and 11.2 of Contract
Agreement [the copy I have with me] with Cafeteria Operator should the
performance report [if at all submitted] of Cafeteria Service Provider
has been taken into consideration by AIT Contact Manager/Management
[HIO] in time SU would not have received flooding of most mails of this
kind.

It is not unlikely that most of the students from their
general/commonsense blame Student Union instead of blaming other
entity/body who is/are officially tasked with dealing these kind of
matter. No matter whatever blame SU is shouldering crucial thing is
mitigating the concerns of students is first priority for SU.

SU expect a quick and effective response having visible positive
outcome from the concern body on an urgent basis. Because, it is not at
all a new thing that SU/SU President raised his concern in many forum
earlier to take these kind of matters seriously; unfortunately, still
we have to see flooding of mails on the same matter expressing almost
same concerns.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

With regards,
Saroar
President AIT SU

reasonable price for the students and of coz with cleanliness. We are
not going to eat the decorations for sure. If the new cafeteria can
provide us the variety of food menu, that would be great. Please do
something for AIT students.

Hello dear SU President
i think the concern raised by friends is genuine and worth your
immediate attention. the insufficent arrangements of food at new
cafetraria has left students with no option.
At the new cafeteria, the choice and quantity of food is very limited,
the cuisine style is so ambiguous that once cannot identify its region
specific attribute and style. Moreover the chicken is cooked with skin,
which most of south Asian avoid eating; as a result students are left
with no option other than to eat at Indian snack bar which further
worsens the situation mainly due to:

1. Health and hygiene is never observed at Indian snack bar. You will
find people washing their hands and cleaning their mouth in the same
wash basin which is used for cleaning pots and utensils which provides
the basis for suspicious hygiene measures inside the kitchen as well.

2. The rates for different dishes fluctuates on daily bases like stock
exchange while average time spendings for eating time some time exceeds
one hour as they have limited manpower to facilitate overcrowded
counter.

In this connection I would like to request you to please look into the
matter, being a student and having same stake I think you will not
take time to realize the extent of the problems.

We will look forward to hear some good new from your side.

Snack Bar, and I have found an insect in my MEAL!!!

I just wanted to share it with you all. I do not wish to go upto the
vendor and scream my heart out.

One sincere request, Do something about it!!!

Dear All,

I'm sorry if this email bothering some of you, but I think this is a
serious matter for those who eat in the cafetaria, and it must be taken
care as soon as possible, even if midterm exams is coming, how can you
eat something that you are not sure about its hygiene?
if you eat something that isn't hygienics and then you become sick, how
can you do the exams?

I don't know if anybody take notice about the glass in the cafetaria.
As far as I can see, the glass sometimes still has dirt in it and
sometimes the glass has strange smell. I also have heard that the
drinking water is smelly.
I think the smell is not coming from the water but from the glass,
because I have tried several times to compare 2 glasses.

Best Regards,

Dear Friends,
Thanks for raising the issue and of course I agree with all of you
about complains against cafeteria and snack bar. As I have seen SU
President has already sent an email to administration by giving cc to
all students and some of the responsible AIT authority as well. But, I
am wondering to see that apparently there is no response from AIT
authority (of course we do not know whether SU President has got any
response or not?). Anyway one reason could be because of weekend. But I
do believe that all students are waiting to see immediate response from
authority concerned.

I think an open forum could be arranged by SU regarding the raised
issue, where concerned AIT authority, representative from Cafeteria
operators (so called international standard food vendor) and SU Snack
bar may be present and of course student will be there to present their
complains. I do believe solution will come through this dialogue.

Finally I shall request no more mail regarding the issue, lets request
SU to arrange an open forum immediately and friends make sure that you
will present there with your complains.

Cheers.

Dear SU President,

As you have been invited, we, I mean the AIT presentatives some of them
are the student representatives, will have the meeting with Sodexho
this Wed, 5 March to address several issues including Sodexho's
performance of the services. This meeting was in fact scheduled in Feb
but could not because of the availability of the Sodexho Excutives. In
this connection, we would also like to recall that before signing the
contract with Sodexho, the SU has had agreed that an independent
survey/evaluation on the Cafeteria, especially for the first 3 months
of the operation, should be carried out by the SU. And there was a
proposal for setting up a user committee to assist the Institute in
regularly monitoring the services at the Cafeteria. Please prepare and
consolidate all concerns and suggestions from students points of view
so that the SU representative could bring to this meeting.

In addition, a planned meeting between the Infra Office and SU is set
for Monday, 10 March, in which several issues including the hygiene of
the SU Snak Bar will be discussed. As per current set up, the SU has
many says in the management of SU Snack Bar where the Infra Office
helps the SU in administration works.

With best regards.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Head Infrastructure,

Thank you for your mail. As SU mail moderator I could have turned down
your reply to AIT students where you have provided 100% untrue
information regarding SU administered/commissioned independent
survey/evaluation after 3 months of Cafeteria Operation. I would rather
request higher Authority of AIT for investigating your questionable
claim which I think undermined SU in this crisis situation. At the same
time I will request you not to provide the students any information
from wild guess with respect to this food matters.

I am sorry to say what SU can do [if there is at all to do
independently] is clearly mentioned in the formal agreement and I can
give you challenge nothing like is stated as you mentioned. I would
request you to provide all AIT Students [if necessary use
sutudents@ait.ac.th] the final soft copy of Agreement with the
Cafeteria Operator.

SU further like to remind for all concerned that this Cafeteria
Outsourcing process started some times in 2006; this cafeteria
outsourcing is a legacy for the January 2008 Semester SU.

I am sorry to apologize that on 5 March I have my scheduled exam 9-12
[tomorrow will be announced either 2/3 hr] ; if any meeting take place
that time I have to send representative of SU.

I am sorry for any inconvenience.
With warmest regards,
Truly

Dear Friends, In response to infrastructure email to student regarding
cafeteria case

I would suggest that we should write more emails to SU president then
by the end SU president has to forward all emails to infrastructure or
the person who take care of it. I am a bit doubt that if only few
students complain then they will not listen and if so we will die
before we get our master or PhD degree at AIT. Why?????? In my point of
view there are four reasons: 1. Traffics accident; coz you have to
cross the road to Thamasat university in order to get your preference
food 2. Malnutrition: coz you have less option to chose in the
cafeteria and long queue in the snack bar 3. Malaria or fever; Coz of
you have to go to open space in the new kiosk near to the lake
4. Hunger; Coz the prices in the cafeteria are so expensive (mostly
30bath up). Hehhehe we are not greedy but we want some thing acceptable.

So hurry up lets write emails and Mr. President please find your way on
how to get all the ideas, comments, and suggestion and then forward to
our decision makers.

Thank you very much.

Best Wishes,

SATO

Dear Friends,

In my opinion, not only the SU president but all AIT members and also the
AIT President shall to listen to student's voice and feedback.

Frankly speaking, after I read Head of Infra.'s answer email, many questions
have been followed up:

1. Why don't you (Head of Infra.) do anything until there were flooding of
complained emails for the Cafeteria's problem?

2. After you got these emails, why don't you (Head of Infra.) do anything to
mitigate/improve/find out the solution of AIT cafeteria's problem. If the
email writing can solve the problem so no need to employ the Ph.D. degree to
undertake the Head of Infra. position. For this case, Under-Graduated degree
is more than enough.

3. Lastly, and very seriously, I feel like Head of Infra. is taking care the
"Sodexho's benefit" much more than paying attention to "AIT and Students's
welfare". From his email, he doesn't show or act any responsibility for the
Cafeteria's problem!!!

I insist that all AIT memeber should not be quiet.

Dear all fellow sufferers,

I completely agree with the email below. I think what we have to do now is
we need to help together find the solution. But, what I got from Head of
Infrastructure's reply does not give me any clues. Why do not you (Head of
Infra.) do something more than just say that it "should be carried out by
SU"? We did not judge you are to blame, but we do need your help. So during
this confusion period, could you please (Head of Infra.) use your
authorization to do something more than just calling for the meeting.

Come on every one!!! Do not just keep quiet. Its time to show our power to
correct wrong things and make it up better. SU work for us as well as they
need our support.

We have all the right to have a delightful semester in AIT.

Seriously regards,

Anyway, thank God! I've finished my time here.

The cooks and their smart managers just don't even think about the ingredient of any ordinary meal which should contains meat, vegetable, cereal and fat (Or sth similar for starch, protein, vitamin and fat) as I has seen in a TV program for Kids in my country.

Sorry Soh**** but I may the poor business disappear!
