AIT from Space
For one who is going to visit AIT, it's great to locate a building or a dormitory before the departure. Knowing the target can save time in such a big area like AIT. Giving direction or highlighting a building to a visitor can easily be made by an AITian using a so-called "pictomap". Pictomap is such a compound word formed by two components:
picture and
map. A vector layer or drawing is over-draped onto another high-spatial resolution satellite image makes it easy to see "what-on-earth" over AIT.
Along with Google Earth, Wikimapia (http://www.wikimapia.com) provides an internet map service which enables user to view image map of any location on the planet with different scales. A nice thing of this service is it allows user to add up more details and information about any location on the map. With this huge contribution from million users around the world, surprisingly you can find your favourite location with updated information. However, a drawback should also be mentioned here, which relates to the reliability of the information. Nobody can guarantee 100% that the information is correct and verified. Regardless this matter of responsibility, Wikimapia service is really useful and information rich.
Check it out here for the Pictomap of AITA few years ago, I also developed a simple site for the internet map of AIT. This site requires JAVA run-time engine to properly view the map. The site relies on the website of
GIS&RS field of study (AIT).
